Job Description Summary

Dr. Young is looking for junior research assistants (JRA) to join her research team for ongoing projects related to stormwater treatment.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

The junior research assistant (JRA) will:
  • work on a team of researchers comprised of the PI-Young, technicians, graduate students, and undergraduates.
  • support the research in the Young Lab by performing laboratory experiments that test the efficacy of a new nutrient material, geotextile.
  • conduct a matrix of water quality experiments and analysis to investigate three adsorbent media (biochar, activated carbon, and titanium dioxide) for nutrient removal capabilities of geotextiles.
  • use scanning electron microscopes, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, and experimental consumables including glassware, pipettes, sample collection containers, disposable gloves, and other supplies to conduct the research.

Other Functions:

The JRA may also -
  • support Dr. Young by performing literature reviews and writing research papers.
  • take monthly trips to North Carolina State University to verify the efficacy of the geotextile as a water treatment mechanism.
  • attend a water-focused conference.
  • take an annual trip to the Auburn University Stormwater Facility is required for technology implementation.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

This position is ideal for an individual who has recently graduated from a community college/technical school with extensive laboratory experience or a current upper-class student preparing to enter graduate school post-graduation.

The JRA must practice:
  • high quality organizational skills
  • professional communication
  • perform independent laboratory experiments related to water quality.
The JRA must be proficient in:
  • Microsoft Office suite
  • Graphing software (Mathematica, MatLab, SigmaPlot).
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (optional):

The ideal candidate should show an interest in environmental and water quality issues through previous coursework and extracurricular experiences.

Physical Requirements:

The JRA must be able capable of performing experiments in a BSL-2 lab. The JRA must be able to travel using a commercial airline.

Accountabilities:

The JRA will meet with Dr. Young every week and will communicate efficiently regarding laboratory and data needs. The JRA will attend monthly meetings with the collaborators (North Carolina State University, Auburn University, University of South Alabama) and provide updates regarding their role with the research project.
