Chief Purpose of this position:

The College of Health Professions Patient Counseling Department invites candidates to apply for the ACPE Educator term faculty position.

Position Responsibilities

Specific duties include the following, in order to develop and equip spiritual care professionals and CPE students to provide evidenced-based care to people of diverse backgrounds and value systems.
  • Teach and clinically supervise students enrolled in the Master of Science and postbaccalaureate Graduate Certificate educational programs including students in advanced training seeking Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) certification
  • Teach care and education in a manner that is theologically aware and cognizant of current theories and skills in caring for people who are ill, in crisis, or seeking greater degrees of wellness
  • Work holistically with other disciplines and to promote and interpret the place of clinical spiritual care
  • Provide sensitive and competent spiritual care to patients, families, and staff in which the dignity of culture and the experience of each individual is valued
  • Promote a supportive environment of a caring community in which to develop students who are in the professional formation process
  • Promote the advancement of research literacy and evidence-based practice for health care chaplaincy
  • Respond to the diversity of spiritual and cultural needs and practices
  • Educate staff, students, and community toward competency in spiritual care and awareness of spiritual issues in health care
  • Provide spiritual care to patients, families, and visitors at the health system
  • Partner with the department chair/director, other faculty and staff, and the Professional Advisory Group (PAG) on student education and supervision, curriculum development and implementation, holistic admissions process, and ACPE accreditation and certification standards
  • Participate in professional and interprofessional education
  • Serve on department, college, and/or university committees
  • Other duties may be assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Certified Educator Candidate (Phase II) through the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education
  • Five or more years of professional experience in the area of spiritual care (chaplaincy)
  • Master of Divinity degree, seminary degree, or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience or high potential for fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
  • Capacity to develop and adapt technology for educational and reporting purposes
  • Demonstrate a capacity to work with and adapt models of education related to educational goals of the institution Board Certified Chaplain
Preferred Qualifications
  • Fully Certified Educator (CE) by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education
  • Earned doctorate, PhD or DMin
  • Experience on national ACPE accreditation committee
  • Demonstrated history of scholarship/research/publication
  • Leadership in national, regional, and state professional organizations through elected office or committee service
  • Three years or more experience in spiritual care/clinical CPE at a Level 1 Trauma and teaching institution
