Position Description: The laboratory of Dr. Joseph Church, M.D. in the Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Rangos Research Center has an immediate opening for a talented and passionate postdoctoral associate. The lab’s primary goal is to develop novel methods for treating congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) prenatally through the study of animal models and the use of molecular biology techniques and to translate research findings into patient treatments. We are interested in recruiting Ph.D. candidates in Biology or other relevant disciplines, for laboratory research that will study the morphologic and molecular derangements that occur in vivo models of CDH, and how these are affected by prenatal interventions such as tracheal occlusion and intra-amniotic sildenafil administration. The post-doctoral research fellow will work on independent and collaborative projects working with CDH disease and intervention models in rodents. The successful applicant should have experience in biology with specific skills in histology, mouse and rate animal models, and common molecular biological techniques. Hands-on experience with Animal Husbandry is required. The post-doctoral associate will perform in-utero fetal manipulations and procedures such as injections and surgical techniques.

Candidates that have an interest in mechanistic and translational studies in CDH and prenatal lung development are encouraged to apply. The qualified applicants will be required to conduct research, interpret results, prepare manuscripts, and aid in the preparation of grant applications. The required expertise includes all common molecular biology techniques. The applicant should have command of the English language, good interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, critical thinking ability and evidence of experience, and good writing skills through first author publications in peer-reviewed journals. The applicant should also be proficient in computer software usage including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and statistical packages.
