The University of Pittsburgh, Health Sciences Core Research Facility, is seeking a Research Technician for the Gnotobiotic facility.This individual will provide mammalian specimen husbandry and care for a variety of mammalian specimen species under the guidance and supervision of more experienced Gnotobiotic facility personnel and in accordance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and internally established policies and procedures.The incumbent will provide sanitation, custodial, and other support services required for the daily operation and maintenance of the gnotobiotic facility under moderate to minimal supervision.The incumbent will perform some duties that require specialized skills associated with the care and handling of laboratory specimens, the sanitation of facilities, and the operation and maintenance of equipment.This individual will perform routine preventive maintenance procedures and minor repairs on germ-free isolators, caging systems, and other equipment used to provide laboratory mammalian specimen husbandry and care. The individual will collect samples from mammalian specimen and isolators weekly for contamination testing.The position will require flexibility with shift/hours and there may be times when the individual needs to adjust their day (i.e. arrive early or leave late) to accommodate the care of the mammalian specimen.The position will be required to work on evenings and weekends as this individual will be expected to participate in weekend and holiday rotations to care for the mammalian specimen. Equivalent relevant work experience may be substituted for degree requirement. Some experience in a laboratory setting is desired.

Physical Effort: Moderate - must be able to stand for extended periods of time; push, pull, reach, and bend repeatedly, lift and move 50 lbs., including caging and bags of food, and bedding. This person must also be to visualize, assess, handle, and restrain both small and large mammalian species, work with and negotiate around gnotobiotic facility caging and equipment; operate mechanical equipment required by the position, accurately and legibly document written information, utilize email, and effectively communicate verbally. Ability to use general office and lab equipment.
