Job Description Summary:
This position provides professional nursing care and patient monitoring for clinical trials. Responsible for working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, research and hospital staff to recruit, screen, educate, and assist in the overall clinical study coordination of clinical research. The Clinical Nurse Research Coordinator will manage clinical research studies by coordinating and participating in a variety of complex activities involved in the collection, compilation, documentation and analysis of clinical research data. Monitor participants' progress including documenting and reporting adverse events. Participate in periodic quality assurance audits of protocols.

Job Description:

Required Qualifications:
  • Associates degree in Nursing. Experience may substitute for a degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • Current basic CPR certification
  • At least 2 years of clinical experience
  • No personal contradictions (e.g. pacemakers) to being in the Magnet Room
  • Ability to administer IV's and perform blood draws
  • Compassionate and professional individual with ability to relate to physicians, primary investigators, students, visitors and hospital patients and staff
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality of all patient medical, research, and financial records.
  • Good computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to work independently but also function well as part of a team
  • Highly organized, analytical and meticulous person with good organizational skills, strong interpersonal and inter-professional skills, problem solving, communication and writing skills


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in Nursing
  • Experience coordinating collaborative research efforts in an active research setting
  • Working knowledge of KUMC's e-Compliance system
  • Certification as a study coordinator
  • Experience with Neurology patients
  • Working knowledge and experience with MRI
  • Knowledge of Federal research regulatory requirements
  • Ability to do ultrasounds on pregnant women and do fetal measurements.


Job Duties Outlined:
  • Provide clinical care support for MS studies.
  • Participates in the development of new research proposals; assist investigators/ residents or students with developing research proposals and securing IRB approval.
  • Work with investigators, residents, staff doctors and hospital staff to identify potential subjects for research studies.
  • Review and collect necessary data for assigned research studies; be able to review medical records to determine if patients meet study requirements.
  • Coordinate research subject visits including scheduling transportation, MRI, ultra sound scans and neuropsychological testing as required; complete research consent process with research study subjects.
  • Maintain excellent communication among research participants, testing facilities and researchers involved in study. Carry out follow-up phone calls to each patient throughout the year to monitor their health situation and to ensure continuing involvement in study.
  • Maintain data records on study subjects in assigned studies and ensures that data is complete on each subject; ensure that HIPPA requirements are met and maintained regarding research subjects
  • Maintain research study records to meet Human Subjects/Research Committee compliance requirements, gather and prepare necessary material and forms for IRB approval necessary for revisions in research studies.
  • Assist with the education of residents/students, MS Center volunteers regarding the research compliance processes
  • Perform inventory of supplies in Prep Room that are used for study subjects and orders supplies when appropriate or notifies PI to order.
  • Provide education and information to visitors, patients, staff, and study subjects; assists with the development of educational and informational and educational handouts for study subjects.
  • Participate in public relation activities when appropriate.
  • Provide general health information to all MS staff as needed.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings.
  • Maintain flexibility to be available after-hours, including weekends, on occasion as might be warranted by specific studies
  • Be a consistent, dependable and committed team member.
  • Any other duties as might be assigned by the Director from time to time.
