Immunology/Serology Lab Manager
Budgeted Salary Range: Initial placement will be between $66,600.00 - $96,200.00/Annual, commensurate with educational background and relevant working experience.
Under general direction of the Immunology/Serology Discipline Head, manages the Davis Immunology/Serology laboratory and provides support/consultation to immunology/serology personnel at three remote branch locations. Responsibilities include serologic evaluation of veterinary clinical specimens; supervision, management and training of technical staff in the Davis Immunology laboratory; and routine consultation, training, technical support, and quality control for the three branch immunology/serology sections. Incumbent participates in trouble-shooting diagnostic assay performance, development of new or improved immunology diagnostic techniques, and independent evaluation/implementation of assays and reagents for improvement of current diagnostic services. Must integrate the related fields of veterinary serology, virology, bacteriology, and cell culture for effective diagnostic testing. This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Immunology, Biology, Animal Science, or a closely related field, or equivalent combination of bench and supervisory experience, method development and training, with experience in the fields of veterinary immunology, serology, virology, bacteriology, and/or cell culture.
- Experience with quality control and quality assurance methods in a laboratory that utilizes complex methodology. Skills to understand and use complex laboratory protocols, equipment manuals, and procedural documents. Skills to produce and quality control immunologic reagents, and to obtain and maintain National Veterinary Service Laboratory certification and quality control standards for serologic assays.
- Experience working in a high throughput clinical laboratory, and skills to work accurately under multiple deadlines.
- Skills and experience in performing diagnostic serologic methods including immunodiffusion, serum virus neutralization, ELISA, agglutination, hemagglutination-inhibition, immunofluorescence, and complement-fixation, using laboratory equipment including computers, biosafety cabinets, ELISA readers and washers, automated pipetting and diluting equipment, centrifuges, incubators, scales and balances, and microscopes. Experience and skills to instruct, technically train, and provide immunology-related consultation to a wide variety of technical and professional personnel.
- Skills to provide effective laboratory management and supervision of technical staff in a high production analytical laboratory including training and evaluating work performance of personnel, prioritizing workload, and scheduling personnel to meet workload demands. Skills to effectively manage and monitor appropriate and cost-effective ordering and use of laboratory supplies and equipment. Skills to keep neat and accurate records and files, and to write clear and concise reports and data analyses.
- Independent thinking, decision-making and problem-solving skills to evaluate and solve problems and/or make sound recommendations.
- Skills to write and maintain Standard Operating Procedures, and to follow specified official/written protocols that include safe handling and disposal of waste solvents, biohazardous, and chemical materials and to instruct/monitor the same for laboratory personnel.
Preferred:
- Experience working under University personnel and purchasing policies and procedures and/or budgetary experience and skills to project and justify cost expenditures for laboratory needs.
- Experience working with veterinary infectious diseases and/or familiarity with livestock, horses, poultry, or agriculture.
- Skills to critically evaluate and improve existing technologies, protocols, and procedures for veterinary diagnostic assays. Skills and experience in evaluating commercial products for suitability for laboratory use, including analysis of cost efficiency, technical performance, and quality control.
- Skills to devise, organize, and supervise laboratory developmental projects.
