Job Description:


Empire State University is currently seeking a full-time Veteran & Military Career Services Coordinator located at various Empire State locations in New York State. We seek a Veteran & Military Career Services Coordinator (State Title: Senior Staff Assistant) with experience in networking, building relationships, and counseling military and veteran students transitioning into civilian careers. The selected incumbent will report to the Director of Career & Experiential Learning Services within the division of Student Success. This position will work in collaboration with the Veteran and Military Resource Center (VMRC). The Veteran & Military Career Services Coordinator works with military and veteran students and alumni to provide career counseling in translating their military experience to their career goals as they transition to civilian life.

The successful candidate will have sensitivity and understanding for the unique challenges faced by military service members and veterans during the career transition process. They will be committed to student success by supporting SUNY Empire students and ensuring they have information and access to local resources across the state. This person must be collaborative, independent, a self-starter, and able to work with diverse faculty, staff, and students.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Provide comprehensive career counseling to military service members and veterans, assisting them in translating their military skills and experiences into civilian job qualifications.
  • Help individuals explore career paths based on their skills, interests, and goals.
  • Review resumes and cover letters. Provide guidance on networking strategies, job search techniques, and interview preparation.
  • Collaborate with local based partners (i.e. Chambers of Commerce, Department of Labor, etc.) to identify military/veteran preferred organizations. Build/maintain partnerships with employers.
  • Facilitate mentorship programs that pair military clients with industry professionals or veterans who have successfully transitioned to civilian careers.
  • Organize networking events to help students and alums expand their professional connections.
  • Source articles and write articles for Career Hub to support students and internships. Contribute resources to support veteran and military student success.
  • Track data trends and Career Hub analytics to make data-informed recommendations relevant to the Office of Career & Experiential Learning Services.
  • Partner with the Veteran and Military Resource Center to advocate for the unique needs of military-affiliated individuals within the institution or organization.
  • Raise awareness of available services through presentations, outreach, and marketing efforts.

Requirements:


Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of two years' experience recruiting employers working with military service members, veterans, and their families, preferably in a career counseling or support role.
  • Strong understanding of labor market trends, job search strategies, and industry-specific requirements.
  • Evidence of relationship-building or project-management skills
  • Evidence of ability to communicate, engage, and develop rapport with individuals of diverse cultural, social, and religious backgrounds and varied age, gender, and sexual orientation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Career Services experience in a higher education environment or Human Resources experience.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with different stakeholders and programs.
  • Proficiency in using career development technology platforms and online resources.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English
  • Prior knowledge of and experience in working with bilingual and emergent bilingual learners, particularly in online settings.
  • Prior experience working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Special Information:
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Rank/Salary: SL3 / $60,000.
