Director of Development and Acquisitions
Realm Entertainment is a startup motion picture and television studio gearing up to produce diverse blockbuster entertainment while breaking brilliant undiscovered talent both in front of and behind the camera. Even though Realm is a film company, we see promise in filling this position via the literary sector.
Although Realm is not a traditional faith-based company and will be producing content of a wide array of genres and maturity levels, and although one's personal faith is not a criterion for this position (or any position), the company is Christian-led, and its content will be broadly consistent with Judeo-Christian values. Realm will not produce gratuitously sexual, violent, profane, or overly edgy content, but rather center on themes of hope, heroism, and redemption.
As we gear up to scout, acquire, and develop an ever-expanding slate of properties for production, we're forming a Development and Acquisitions department. To spearhead and are looking to bring on a Director of Development and Acquisitions to launch and lead it.
The overarching work of the Director of Development and Acquisitions will be to concertedly seek out and acquire IP (from a myriad of sources and source types) suitable for mainstream blockbuster movie and television production to build out a large catalog of properties, then selecting and shepherding screenwriters to creatively develop the properties for production. (As a startup needing to be frugal with respect to expenditures, engaging brilliant yet undiscovered or relatively unknown talent at modest fees will be essential.) In this way, we will build Realm as a studio from the ground up.
This work will include:
- Searching out and discovering extraordinary screenwriters, playwrights, and even literary fiction authors to write Realm projects.
- Casting a wide search net to discover and acquire promising unproduced IP such as books and already written scripts.
- Searching out, discovering, and acquiring partially filmed but aborted and incomplete movies, which Realm will then complete.
- Search out and acquiring the rights to successful past and present foreign films and television shows, then developing them for remake.
- Broadly researching past, present, and ancient stories, epics, fables, legends, etc. from the many nations, cultures, and traditions around the world, then developing them for the screen.
- Searching script-aggregation and coverage websites for properties.
- Researching award- and festival-nominated and winning playwrights and screenwriters, at both major and smaller regional festivals. (We will robustly tap into the theatre sector to identify outstanding playwrights to engage as screenwriters.)
Though fully funded, Realm is still currently a startup, and as such does not yet have a large staff, so although the Director of Development and Acquisitions will be supported by outsourced freelancers, the role will also involve a lot of hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves trenchwork.
In addition to experience and skills, character, commitment, passion and drive are essential for this position. We're looking for:
- A results-driven, take-charge leader unintimidated by ambitious KPIs
- An unstoppable, go-for-broke mindset that in all matters relentlessly swings for the fence
- A tireless idea innovator that doesn't wait for solutions but forges them
- Uncompromising integrity, honesty, and reliability
We are presently determining whether this will be a fully in-person, fully virtual, or hybrid position.
Compensation will be discussed in meetings, and may be negotiable.
Thank you.
The key quality we're looking for in filling this role is the proven ability to seek out and vet literary and/or script submissions, identify and acquire the most promising of them, then creatively shepherd writers through revisions. We are not indicating a minimum amount of requisite experience here, yet only applicants whose experience and track record clearly demonstrate this will be considered.
