Job Description:


Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Human Resource Manager I (00498) in the Office of Human Resources. Responsibilities will include day-to-day management of staffing, selection, onboarding, and performance management which includes supervision of four full-time staff. This will be a hands-on, working manager who will not only be heavily involved in the day-to-day work activities, but will also be accountable for the work of the team. May include additional responsibilities in other areas of human resources such as benefits, compliance, and training and development.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide accurate interpretation of and ensure compliance with applicable federal and state HR related laws and regulations as well as University and Commonwealth of VA policies, procedures and practices
  • Perform daily tasks as well as provide supervision and guidance related to staffing, selection, onboarding, and performance management, including but not limited to ensuring:
    • appropriate and legal staffing and selection process
    • advertising/hiring documents processed timely
    • accurate position data
    • appropriate starting salaries
    • accuracy and timeliness of onboarding packets and contracts
    • fingerprinting as appropriate
    • transfer files requested timely
    • accuracy of new hire data
    • timely new hire benefit elections
    • EWP or performance plan and position description completed
    • evaluations completed as appropriate
    • systems updated as applicable upon receipt of performance documents
  • Collaborate and develop solid working relationships/partnerships with faculty and staff as well as the HR team
  • Engage in professional, courteous, and effective oral and written communication in all interactions
  • Consistently demonstrate a sense of urgency and prioritize multiple deadline sensitive projects simultaneously
  • Engage in direct interaction, consultation, and problem resolution with management, faculty, staff, and the public on a range of issues that require proper judgment and tactical decision making
  • Maintain records and compile reports
  • Responsible for unemployment claims
  • Handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately
  • Provide professional assistance in other human resource functional areas as needed which may include benefits, compliance, and training and development

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or related field preferred
  • Progressively responsible experience in Human Resources; comprehensive knowledge of human resource functional areas to include staffing, selection, onboarding, and performance management
  • Working knowledge of federal and state HR related regulations; ability to read and accurately interpret laws, regulations, policies, procedures, etc.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining accurate, auditable and secure records
  • Proven ability to analyze data efficiently and reach conclusions which are logical and legally supportable
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment with the ability to change work direction at any given time to meet demands of the office; proven ability to effectively organize and prioritize
  • Demonstrated ability to lead/mentor teams within aggressive deadlines
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; must communicate/interact respectfully and courteously with a high degree of professionalism; ability to clearly communicate information orally and in writing
  • Must be a self-directed problem solver
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, web based applications and automated HRIS systems
  • Track record of professional conduct, with the ability to develop effective working relationships with all levels of management and employees
  • Customer service driven attitude
  • Demonstrated ability to use proper judgment and decision making skills, and to work as a team member
  • Proven ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion
  • Ability to develop ideas in a logical sequence and to process data efficiently, timely, and with a high degree of accuracy
  • Must be flexible, collaborative, and resilient with a positive attitude
  • Proficiency in Commonwealth of VA human resource policies, procedures and practices preferred
  • Knowledge of classification and compensation and benefits preferred
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred
  • HR certification preferred

Additional Information:


This is a full-time, classified, exempt position in a pay band 5. Minimum starting salary $70,000. Commonwealth of Virginia benefits accompany this position.
