Assistant Professor of Music (Comparative Musicology)
Lafayette College: Faculty Positions: Music

Location: Easton, PA
Open Date: Nov 01, 2023

Description
The Department of Music at Lafayette College invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Music, with a specialization in comparative musicology. The Department seeks a comparative musicologist broadly conversant with current trends in the relevant scholarship, who can assume responsibility for a varied suite of courses in music outside the European composed canon. We seek an appointee knowledgeable about multiple musical cultures and their distinctive features. A comparativist might also study folk and popular music traditions, as contrasted with the European-derived art music tradition. The Department would welcome applications from candidates who might also be able to pair musicological expertise with expertise in leading an ensemble.

We especially note important recent developments at the Department in the use of digital technologies - a $500,000 grant from the Sherman Fairchild Foundation, for example - which our new colleague might leverage to enhance teaching and scholarship. Interdisciplinary collaboration in teaching and/or scholarship is encouraged.

We are seeking candidates with a demonstrated enthusiasm for and ability in undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate should be qualified to teach introductory music courses to non-majors as well as upper-level undergraduate courses, in both traditional academic classroom settings and also, as appropriate, applied-music environments. The teaching load is four courses (2:2) in the first year and five courses (3:2) per year thereafter. The successful candidate will also teach in the College's First-Year Seminar Program.

The appointment begins July 1, 2024. A doctorate in musicology or ethnomusicology is expected, although A.B.D. candidates will also be considered. We especially welcome applications from candidates who fulfill the College's commitment to diversity and inclusion. More information about the Department is available at music.lafayette.edu.
