Facilities & Grounds Department - Seasonal Groundskeeper: Job duties to include all areas of grounds maintenance, landscaping & general facility upkeep. Customer service & interpersonal skills needed. Valid driver's licensed required. Wage $20/hour. Vacation, holiday & sick hours provided. Position to start in May for 40 hrs/wk for 6 months duration. JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of a Maintenance Supervisor, mows and trims grass, participates in the application of fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals, assists with landscaping projects, and performs other tasks to assist in maintaining the County grounds. Assists in maintaining job related equipment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. Essential Functions Operates tractors with mowers, riding mowers and power mowers to cut grass on the County grounds. Trims grass, trees, shrubs, and hedges with power and hand equipment. Operates power-edger for sidewalks. Performs other grounds maintenance functions such as aerating and thatching. Removes brush, dead trees and other debris from grounds. Operates chain saw and other power equipment. Removes trash from trash containers. Changes liners in trash containers. Checks the grounds daily for trash. Operates front-end loader and uses other equipment to develop areas for new lawn, flower beds, or other landscaping plans. Repairs areas damaged by plows or weather conditions. Operates and maintains the irrigation system, includes assisting in repairing broken pipes, valves, pumps and other equipment. Replaces sprinkler heads. Installs landscape timbers, spreads woodchips and stones, and performs other landscaping tasks. Plants grass, flowers, shrubs, and trees. Performs the applications of fertilizer, pesticide and other chemical application. Loads and mixes chemicals, operates application equipment such as tank sprayer, back pack pump, and hand spreader, and posts notices warning of application. Records and maintains application records. Supervises inmate trustees or community work groups assigned to grounds-keeping tasks. Performs interior and exterior painting, includes repairing and preparing walls for painting and applying various types of paint. Requires use of ladders and extension ladders. Assists maintenance staff on larger projects and may fill in for maintenance staff on designated assignments. Performs other related duties as assigned. Regular and predictable attendance is required.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Landscaping equipment including tractors, mowers, chain saw, edgers, weed trimmers, sprinklers, irrigation systems; miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf maintenance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience: Ability to read and follow directions and safety requirements on fertilizers and hand and power equipment and, At least one (1) year of experience in grounds maintenance work.

Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid Driver’s License.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Basic knowledge of methods, techniques, materials and equipment used in grounds maintenance work. Basic knowledge of methods and techniques used in power lawn equipment operation and maintenance. Basic knowledge of safety practices related to operating grounds maintenance equipment. Ability to understand, follow and give oral and written instruction. Ability to work outside in differing climatic conditions for several hours at a time. Ability to perform heavy manual labor.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands: Work is performed primarily in an outdoor environment. While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee may work near moving mechanical equipment in adverse weather conditions. The employee may encounter wet and/or humid conditions, fumes toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee may deal with a high volume of vehicular traffic. The County will provide property safety equipment and safety training. The essential job functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to frequently use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, walk, sit, talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to eighty (80) pounds, and occasionally lift weight up to 100 pounds. The position requires sufficient vision to perform the essential functions of the job.
