Grand Valley State University (GVSU) is deeply committed to student success and is expanding academic advising to provide students with the support they need to succeed in the college environment. This search seeks to hire and place 13 new academic advisors in one of three academic units:  College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Seidman College of Business, and the advising center for exploratory students.

These positions are two-year positions, with intent to move to permanent funding and are eligible for full benefits with retirement vesting occurring after two-years of employment. The position is Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm with the option of one day of remote work after initial training period is complete, with supervisor approval. May have occasional evening or weekend hours. Location may be on the Allendale or Grand Rapids campus depending on which academic unit the advisors is hired into.

 

Responsibilities:

Provide proactive, timely, and accurate academic advising to undergraduate students who are exploratory, or majoring in liberal arts and science or business, depending upon the unit in which the advisor will serve. Maintain up-to-date knowledge on university curricula, policies, and procedures.

Use institutional systems and data to proactively assess, monitor, and create strategic outreach to students.  Carefully monitor enrollment and academic success of assigned advisees.

Guide students in exploring potential programs of study across the university and make connections with career exploration as part of the major decision-making process.

Assist students in identifying appropriate academic and personal goals and set an achievable plan supporting goal achievement.

Provide referrals to academic departments, support programs, and other resources as necessary to support student success.

Provide specific and intentional advising and support to students including those experiencing academic difficulty, re-entry, and degree completion. Provide academic advising at freshman, transfer, and international student orientation programs.

Assist with college and university promotional and recruiting events, including occasional nights and weekends, if needed.

Other duties as assigned by the unit administration.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year university.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and access including experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong understanding of and demonstrating a desire for collaborative approaches to problem solving.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work autonomously as well as part of a collaborative team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned master’s degree in education, college student development, adult and higher education or related field.
  • Experience in academic advising and mentoring.
  • Familiarity with trends and best practices in advising and student success.
  • Familiarity with computer information systems and web-based records and registration, particularly Banner, Degree Works and/or EAB Navigate.

 

Salary:  $50,000 commensurate with experience
