Breaking News Reporter
The Cincinnati Enquirer/cincinnati.com part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a digital-first reporter to be part of the Breaking News team.
Job Details:
The breaking news reporter finds and reports on the top news of the day. This person should be cool under pressure, able to write fast and accurately.
A great breaking news reporter cuts through official-speak and lets the community know what’s happening clearly and concisely.
The position requires initiative, accuracy, and urgency. It also demands strong news judgment and the ability to find and identify stories that are important and influential and reflect the community through the inclusion of a variety of voices.
Reporters on this team have moved on to other beats and roles in the newsroom.
Responsibilities:
- Report quickly, clearly and accurately and deliver news via stories, video, newsletters, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or whatever comes next.
- Use metrics to inform story choices and shape beat strategies.
- Work with editors to experiment with new ways of informing and engaging audiences on social platforms and alternate story forms. This includes long-tail (evergreen) content.
- Monitor real-time news and sniff out stories that are important to our audiences.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 2 years of experience preferred, but recent graduates with strong clips will be considered.
- Strong command of AP grammar and style, media law and principles of journalism ethics.
- Self-motivation and self-direction.
- Familiarity with capturing and sharing cell phone photos and videos preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively and get along with different personalities.
- Ability to multitask and excel under deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
- Knows how to use time effectively in a 24-hour news environment.
- Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment.
- Must embrace peer-to-peer feedback and training.
- This position occasionally requires employees to work extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays, sometimes unexpectedly.
- This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
- Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check, motor vehicle record check & drug screen.
