Public Works Department –Water Works Laborer – Meter Reader
The City of Monticello, Illinois is currently accepting applications for a Water Works Laborer-Meter Reader position for the Public Works Department. Under general supervision, reads water meters in order to ensure accurate reading of the meters each month and assists the water billing clerk in the timely processing of any subsequent work orders necessary for the completion of the water and sewer billing process.
Under general supervision assists with all phases of Public Works operations to include but not limited to the following: water treatment plant and water distribution system, waste water treatment plant and waste water collection system including sanitary sewer lift stations and appurtenances, drainage maintenance, street and sidewalk maintenance and repair, winter weather operations, and any other duties of the Public Works Department, as assigned. The minimum requirements for this position are; a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of 3 years of experience in a public works related field meeting or exceeding the essential functions. The applicant must have a valid Illinois driver’s license with CDL-Class B, and Air Brake endorsement, or the ability to obtain CDL-Class B, and Air Brake endorsement within six months of hire date. The applicant must be willing to live within a twelve (12) mile radius of City Hall within six months of hire date, must be able to pass a post-offer employment physical and drug screening and must have good customer service skills dealing with the public. The applicant should have working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities of City owned and operated assets; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities; skilled in operation of commonly used tools and equipment in Municipal operations; and must have the ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time: ability to work safely; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. The applicant must be able to walk for long distances in all weather conditions and must be able to remember locations of meter pits to maximize use of time.
