This is responsible professional work in developing and implementing fire protection engineering programs and services. Work primarily involves the Fire Department's plan review, new construction inspection, and tank inspection programs (including program management); and providing technical expertise and consultation on a wide variety of fire protection engineering issues. Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, this position is characterized by considerable judgment and discretion.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Department's new construction inspection program. Oversee the completion of required tests and inspections relative to fire protection aspects of new construction projects (and inherent fire protection and life safety systems). Oversee the certification of occupancy for buildings, and the acceptance of the fire protection and life safety systems (and/or determine specific requirements for correction).
  • Review, evaluate, and approve: building plans and specifications; plans for fire sprinkler systems; fire alarm systems; standpipe systems; special hazard protection systems; and water supply installations from a fire protection engineering perspective. Review petitions for variances and develop the Department's position on request.
  • Provide high-level fire protection engineering expertise and consultation to various divisions of the Fire Department. Assist with planning and researching future needs of the Fire Department. Provide on-scene technical support at emergency incidents. Provide information on property fire protection features, equipment or devices and hazards to the incident commander. May assist with fire investigation as to origin and cause.
  • Provide specialized fire protection engineering consultation to other City agencies, architects, engineers, property owners, contractors, etc. as appropriate. Serve as the primary Fire Department contact with the development community. Establish positive working relationships with property owners, design professionals and contractors. Develop and maintain a solution based approach to complex or challenging designs.
  • Coordinate the detailed development and revision of related fire codes and ordinances for protection of life, property and preservation of the environment. Work with state and local officials in the code development process.
  • Maintain knowledge of current technological advances related to fire protection engineering. Perform specialized research applicable to fire protection issues. Maintain a high level of technical expertise by attending schools and seminars where applicable.
  • Develop and recommend policies and procedures relating to fire prevention, fire protection and fire inspection practices. Recommend policy and procedural changes in fire prevention and suppression activities as appropriate.
  • Prepare and conduct training programs for Fire Department personnel in areas related to fire protection systems, fire chemistry, special hazards, inspection techniques and building construction as assigned.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Four (4) years of experience in professional fire protection engineering work or a closely related field.
  • Bachelor's degree in fire protection engineering.

Four (4) years of experience applying the following:

  • Theories, principles and practices of fire protection engineering, including fire protection systems, hydraulics, fire chemistry, fire apparatus, and related fire protection technology.
  • Building and fire prevention codes, practices and policies.
  • Fire detection, alarm and suppression systems.
  • Fire behavior and the properties of flammable and hazardous substances.

Two (2) years of experience applying the following:

  • Building construction, design and materials as they relate to fire prevention and control, and life safety.
  • Computer software applicable to the duties of the position.
